TZ Bridge Staging Area

Bowline was open before the plant was built. The old pilings you see on the starboard side as you enter used to go most of the way across. Used to be a very small area on the port side you could use to get in and out. I just read my last post and realized I may have mislead everyone. When I said they opened the channel I meant O&R during the original construction back in the early 70's. They pulled the pilings and made the channel that is there. They also removed another rock pile that was just off the shore line just west of the existing pile.

It was an interesting winter and it will be an interesting summer no doubt. The construction will impact us this was or the other the only question how? We should ad this to Mikes up coming sticky debris related so we all know what's going on. The good new are if there will be so much traffic of barges and construction ships they might clear the water for us from some of the derbies! Hopefully.

Several years ago the power plant got a huge piece of machinery. Way too big to truck in. A tug pushed a loaded barge in Bowline pond to the bulkhead on the left side of the building. Then riggers unloaded it and took it into the plant. Before they did that they marked the rockpile with a buoy. The building in there is the cooling water intake for the plant. The bridge company is probably going to build piers. Maybe they will get rid of the rock pile. I doubt if they have to ask anyones permission to use Bowline. The water intake cannot be obstructed however.

Actually they were selling off pieces that were then shipped down to Texas via barge. If I’m not mistaken the power plant no longer produces any power.

It was 2 new generators that were suppose to be installed. They sat for several years and decided not to finish the job so they sold them off. I think you are right and it was Texas. The funny thing is they are now talking about expanding again.

In other news, the Chair Factory site just north of Emeline Park in the Village of Haverstraw is to become a major staging area for Tappan Zee Bridge construction activities. Iron workers will fabricate massive bridge sections at the site and then float these components by barge to the Tappan Zee. Some State officials expect the Village to be flooded with iron workers and others working on the bridge project.

The staging area will effectively tie up future development on the Chair Factor site (originally intended to become Phase III of Ginsburg Development’s waterfront revitalization project) until at least 2019.

The original Tappan Zee Bridge components were fabricated in dry dock at the former clay pit that now is home to a deep water harbor, Haverstraw Marina. Both bridges, new and old, was and will be born in Haverstraw.

Still in question is the use of Bowline pond . I suppose it all depends on if they can load barges outside with water depths.

They also leased the old Journal news building on 303 across from the mall maybe the project can breath so live into the local economy!

If Bowline is closed, it may be time to look to keep the boat on Long Island Sound...

This is something I have been considering but I still have to wait at least one more year for my daughter to finish High School! But I don't think they will close the pond I hope I'm not disappointed!

Yuk. Never happen for me. I would get out of boating first. I use my boat way too much to be driving out to the sound to jump aboard. Pleanty of other places to anchor out safely on the river.

+1 Hank... I would rather be close to my boat and not have Bowline, than be 2 hours away with traffic and still not have Bowline. Plus now that I have found deep water in my new marina I am happy as a clam....

"Two hours"??? I'm not planning on docking in Rhode Island....

There are so many more places to go on the sound, most of them are a short boat ride from where you dock. I've been thinking about it for years, one day, unless I move south first, I will do it.

Its the car ride to get there. Thats why im not down south jersey, to much traffic.

I quess we will be finding out soon enough. They can load from the river side but will have to clear some of the old dock pilings that are there. If the load from inside hopefully they will only be on the south side. They will have to build some kind of dock to load from. When they did the old bridge they had a pit that they pulled the barge into.

It's pretty shallow inside at the south end.

I heard they are going to borrow SPBM's dredger for a few days Mike.
