vinyl boat wraps

Wet Willie, the problem I can foresee with a patch is two fold depending upon application. If damaged piece is cut out and new piece is carefully fitted in to where it's invisible; it'll only be a matter of time before the new piece shrinks leaving a border around patch. Could gamble and overlap slightly (?) and come back (in time ?) & cut thru new and old at same time, hoping shrinkage is done.
Overlapping will leave an edge that will be visible up close. Just my 2¢.

Hey Bob,
The detailed patch installation instructions call for heat only to be used on the area around the patch; shrinking it into the over lap patch piece.Again, not some thing I would want to attempt without practice, practice, practice first!
For now, we have made our choice; we are gonna continue to find out as much as we can about this this season. If favorably, we are going to have it done during next off-season
 
Willie, since you are kind of restoring your boat, and since you seem to be breaking new ground for the rest of us, I don't think it would be inappropriate to ask for donations.

Actually works on both levels Greg because My Bride's nickname is "Willie" ~ hence the boat name.(man, am *I* digging myself into a hole!)
 
What happens down the road when that has to be removed? How bad is the adhesive removal? I'm getting a vision of the last time I replaced the boot stripe; only about two orders of magnitude worse.

The vinyl wrap uses a different adhesive than a standard decal or stripe.Since starting this thread, I've since seen an installation and product removal. Residue clean-up was mild soap and water. After that a cleaner wax was hand applied. You could not see where the vinyl wrap had been previously installed. Now, I cannot atest to ease of removal say 3yrs. down the road because I haven't witnessed a removal that old. But 3M and the Sign Zoo (www.signzoo.com)do claim that the adhesive residue is minimal at any removal period.
 
Wet Willie, Something else just popped into my mind re this product & it pertains to shrinkage. If the vinyl is cast; this should not pertain. If however, it's calendered; it will shrink in the length direction & actually grow in the width direction. Just experience from 23 years in the calendered vinyl industry.

Glad your still providing input here. These are the kind of issues I want to have answers on before we agree to this installation.I'll post how the vendor responses to this.
 
what kind of prep work is necessary before they wrap the boat? do all chips, nicks, gouges, crazing, etc. need to be filled and faired?

According to the vendors I talked with; no. But deep gouges wll show through the wrap so it may be a good idea to smooth those over first.
