I had a teak bow pulpit 79"long by 23" wide and 1 5/8" thick. I was getting water in the v-birth and traced it to the bow pulpit leaking. When I removed it to caulk, I found the bottom side had rotted away. I guess water just lay under it and rotted away. Thank God the fiberglass deck seems to be in good shape.

I am thinking of building a new bow pulpit out of wood and then fiberglassing the whole thing to completely seal it from water. I have done a lot of fiberglassing over the years and have gooten pretty good. Fellow boaters say my jobs look better than professional work they have had done.

I am thinking of using a full sheet of marine ply cut in half lengthwise and laminating the 2 pieces together to give me 1 1/2" then the fiberglass should make up the last 1/8" of thickness needed.

Any ideas about wood choice? marine ply,or should I use Oak? Any ideas on the best glue to laminate the wood together? Any advice or experience would be appreciated! I priced out a fiberglass bow pulpit from a company that ran over $1800.....I figured I could do it for a lot less!
