Guys many people have been running aground east of the watagh 3. When u clear the bridge heading east, u cant go wide. There is a sand bar that's getting worse right on the east side of the channel . So hug land ( stay west in the channel ) IDK why they don't just drop a temp buoy.

Are you talking about the stretch between the southern most Wantagh bridge and Zachs Bay?

yes Southern most Wantagh ... East side.. Right there ... PEople have been going to far east and either end up on that bar or are on the wrong side of the bar and attempt to cross it !

Good looking out Rob, I thought this might help.

U can see the bar from google earth. The Green buoy ( G5) marks the channel going north of the bridge but everyone used to use it as reference when coming back from zachs. U can no longer use it as its moved way east. So there is no channel boundary other then the bar . So just stay west in the channel. Buddy in my marina just ran aground there last weekend .Channel was crowded and he was just following along. sadly he was the deeper draft boat of the group.

So sad how inaccurate our charts are . What's the date on soundings 1960 ?

Rob

I hate how useless the carts are.

You think at this point in time there could be updated charts based on crowdsourced readings. i go over a place, records location via GPS and depth from sounder. Should overlay into a chart that can be updated (wifi on boat, or uploaded into the system).

We'd have accurate charts with a plethora of reference points...

We need forward scan sonar that works when boat going fast!

navionics is moving in that direction with sonar charts .. I'm just not smart enough to figure it out . doesn't change the geograhics though... so were land or marsh is that's wrong will show x number of feet. ( ON Land )

but atleast they are trying

dave , fwd facing sonar at speed is useless. ur in a boat not a car .. no brakes !

It would be nice if the State would do some dredging, and even better if they would put out some hazard buoys in places where the actual conditions deviate substantially from the information that's on the charts.

It would give you the option to reduce speed quickly or veer off.
If you knew there is 1' a water in say 100 yards, you can at least make some decision.
Also helps if your in a area and not sure of path.
So if you came under the bridge at 5 mph you would see the channel ahead and know where not to go.

Dredging is like a 4 letter word . I don't think we will ever see it they way things are stacked against us ( DEP , EPA ETC )

AS for temporary buoys ... idk who would have jurisdiction. Towns put up the 5 mph signs and CG maintains buoys in state channel . IDK about temp buoys . IT took all summer to get a bouy installed where a day marker was that someone took out the pole . The pole was removed and nothing was put in its place.

Why are west of Lindenhurst? Get your boat at the Anchorage. Everything is east of Lindenhurst

proximity to house!!! close place to hide from spouse !

LOL Rob!!!

PS, good heads up about this course, especially for guys like me that very rarely travel there.

Thanks.

That has always been a dangerous spot. The channel narrows up right at the bridge. Its been that way even before Sandy. People think they can cut the markers short and take the short cut, well you never could unless you were at medium to high tide over there.
