FOWH met with the NPS last week to discuss the ongoing Watch Hill Renovation Project. Although you are aware of recent Press Releases we and the NPS would like to share the following information with you.
The marina renovation project is well underway and the NPS is very pleased with the contractor and the work to date. While the renovation was always focused on replacing electrical and lighting systems, and adjacent bulkhead and boardwalk, the NPS decided to replace the entire water system. After the demolition which provided a clear view of the water systems, it was obvious these were in need of replacement as well.
As you may already know from prior NPS Press Releases, there are many more steps needed to complete the entire renovation project including but not limited to working on sheathing and the substructure of the decking. The NPS will continually be reassessing as the project moves along and they're hoping to provide us with more information in June. But, at this point in time, the NPS confirms the work will continue as planned through September 1st, 2017. That said, the Watch Hill Marina will be closed to ferry and private boats through at least September 1st, 2017. The marina, visitor center, bathrooms, and family tent campgrounds will be closed and needless to say there will be no food or beverage services available. There will be no lifeguarded beach as well. Private boats may anchor on the shallows but there will be no entry to the inside of the marina while the contractor continues the renovation project.
Regulatory buoys stating "Marina Closed" will be floating near the Watch Hill buoys as well as a "Marina Closed" sign and booms across the mouth of the marina.
All D Dock slips will be equipped with 50 amp 208 volt electricity while the rest of the slips (A Land, A/B Pier, B Land, C Land and C/D Pier) will have 50 amp 125 volt electricity. D Dock slips will still number 23 in total but the NPS has decided to realign the openings between the poles for better boat beam accommodation.
For your information, the Navigation Range Lights have been determined by the U. S. Coast Guard to have a vector a couple of degrees off from the built channel. The NPS is in the process of evaluating the situation. Range lights require the channel to be straight. If it is determined that shoaling requires the channel to have a slight bend in it, the lights will need to be shut off.
We will all miss the Watch Hill Marina this season but we look forward to a new and improved Watch Hill in 2018! FOWH will stay in touch with the NPS and will provide you with an update in June.
Have a safe and enjoyable early boating season!
