"There are currently 2 CALFED projects related to barriers across Delta waterways. One is the Franks tract Project (a barriers across Three Mile Slough and/or False River). The second is the 2-Gates Project which involves barriers across Old River and Connection Slough. The meeting on Aug. 6 is in regard to the 2-Gate Project.

RBOC's position is that if barriers are placed across navigable waterways there should be operable boat locks incorporated into their design that will allow the passage of recreational boats. This position can be seen at www.rboc.org under Regional Issues."

I read some of the documentation at http://www.science.calwater.ca.gov/events/reviews/review_2gates.html

The gates would be open Memorial Day and July-Nov. There is a boat launch ramp on either side of the gates in their diagram so those of us with trailerable boats could trailer the boat to the other side of the gate to get around them. The objective of what they want to do seems to be to maximize water exports at the pumps without the smelt stacking up at the pumps or pumping being limited by present maximum allowable reverse flows in Old River.

If you zoom out on Google maps to where you can see Walnut Grove and Clifton Court Forebay fresh water comes down the Sac, open the cross channel gates so the fresh water flows down the Moke, down through Mildred, to Clifton Court and the export pumps one could probably use these proposed 2-gates to reduce salinity at the export pumps. Of course for people like me whose CCWD intake is Rock Slough we get less fresh water unless they do put in that alternative intake at Disco Bay then we get some of the good fresh water.
 
I often use Connection Slu. If they put in a gate there as well as the existing bridge, the time it takes me to get through that area will increase significantly. At least I can get my boat on a trailer, but what an unnecesary delay!!!!

REMEMBER: the real agenda here is not the smelt! It is 1] to prevent salt intrusion caused be the "peripheral canal" [by whatever name]; and 2] to move more water out of the Delta.

These gates need to fought against by all folks who love the Delta and want to preserve it!
 
I haven't been paying as much attention to this as I should be. But one thing just sticks out at me..The notion of installing launch ramps as a method of porting boats from one side of a structure to another. This is a wonderful solution. Drive the boats right up the ramp, around the structure and back down the other side. A whole new face to boating. The other thing that needs to be looked at is providing some bicycles to help the salmon get up the river when that water is too low.
 
I looked at Google maps and satelite view and changed my mind. I would get better quality CCWD water through the Contra Costa Cannal's Rock Slu intake with the addition of the Old River and Connection Slu gates. That's probably why Sandmound Slu was damed at Rock Slough to prevent saltwater intrusion.
 
There are a couple of gates with trailer transport just north of Tracy. They have been there for 15 or more years. It killed boat traffic in that area, except for a couple small fishing boats now and then. These were supposed to be "temporary" too. Ha! Do NOT believe what they say. They will lie and say anything to get what they want. Less water flowing through the Delta and higher salinity in the water which is left will hasten the killing of the delta and change its flora, fauna and wildlife forever!!!!

BTW, now they are suggesting a "water tunnel" under the delta instead of a canal. Bypassing the delta will kill the delta regardless of the means for bypassing. Do not let them fool you. Do not be suckered in by their verbiage. It is all a crock of $hit!!!!
 
Just predicting the future flows, CCWD would get better quality water with these gates because it is the same water that will be heading for the Tracy pumps. As for killing boat traffic on Old River and Connection Slu that might be okay, I can get around the gates via the ramps. As for the cruisers, 2 of them with old retiree skippers and admirals just looked back at me from their flying bridge as I navigated their 3 foot wakes west of Mildred last month. I pay those retirees medicare and social security through payroll taxes and they just look back as me and my guest bounce from their wake's crest to trough. If those big cruisers can't get through the gates I might have a better time boating.
 
They paid for their MediCare and Social Security during their working days. You are now paying for YOUR own MediCare and Social Security [you hope], not theirs. That has NOTHING to do with their being inconsiderate, clueless boaters.

These gates will have a major impact on my boating enjoyment whenever the winds kick up over 20 knots. The salinity problems would go away if they stopped removing too much water before it gets to the delta. Remember when the Moth Ball Fleet was in fresh water? Why is it now sitting in salt water, but has not moved? Think about it.

Having enough money or debt to own a large cruiser does not make them any different than you. I certainly don't look down on you because you have a small craft cobbled together with alternative energy. It might not be my cup of tea, but you have every right to enjoy the water, the same as me. When we start fighting amongst ourselves, the other side wins. These gates mean nothing good for the Delta and are being built for one reason and one reason only ....... so Benedict Arnold Schwarzenegger can send more of our water down the agri business and hid southern California cronies. Don't be distracted by the words spoken, Arnie doesn't give two damns about the Delta or our wildlife, it's all about leaving a green legacy when he is actually destroying our resources and taking access away from the people.

As to the retirees medicare and social security, you don't aquire enough money or credit to buy a large cruiser without earning and contributing a lot to those funds while working!
