My Wave Wifi Rouge (3 yrs old) is not operating well anymore and I sent it back to the Manufacturer to look into it. Long and Short of it I have an older unit (ECB model) that is limited to the b/g spectrum whereas the Wifi Rouge in production now (ECN model) covers the b/g/n spectrum and they have advised me to consider purchasing a new one. The manufacturer will not upgrade or sell me the newer model and directed me to contact one of their dealers. I contacted the dealer who I originally purchased from and while they will be happy to sell me another Wave WiFi product they also offered me a similar product (same hardware but different software) that they carry called the Aigean Link 2 after I had asked if they offer an upgrade deal since I already have all of the other components(antenna, mount, cabling etc).

Is anyone currently have or are familiar with the Aigean Link 2 ?

Thanks

ouch ! Danno. whats up with ur existing rougue ?

Rob

Was having a lot of trouble last season where it would not connect to networks that were encrypted and even when I connnected I was only able to get 0.25mbps downloads, uploads were ok at 5- 15 Mbps. After going through a number of calls with Wave back in August/September I sent it it in along with the antenna to have them check. The kept saying that it had 'corrosion' but I knew that not to be the case before I sent it in, finally I got one of their Sr. Techs to look and they agreed that there were no visible signs of corrosion and would look into it further. I let it sit with them for a while until last week when my kids asked why the wifi was not working on the boat - oops I forgot I never got it back/resolved. Was able to speak with them last week and they bench tested it and were not able to replicate my issue BUT was real clear that the unit was old given spectrum and technology changes and this was not a current model.

Was able to get more info after my post on the company from the dealer I bought it from, it seems that they were taken over by a new owner around the time I was working with them last summer. Wave used to offer their dealers a flat rate replacement option which stopped under the new owner which is why the dealer now carries this other brand. In addition, I further learned that the Aigean hardware is the same that Wave uses but the interface(software) is different and the new interface was programmed buy a programmer formally associated with Wave - not sure to what extent the technical aspects crossed over but I did some research on the Aigean founders and see that one of them was formally with Wave.

I thought Ubquity Bullets were the base equipment for Wave wifi. Why not buy one of their units and replace it? It does not have the software "wrapper" but if you have any geek in you it might be a cheaper option.

Boatbum thanks, I did not know that they were the base equipment manufacturer I will look deeper into that. Anyone have experience with Ubquity bullets?

Me. I have used one for a few years now. It does not have any gimmicks and you may find it difficult to set up at first but once you have it figured out it's easy enough.
I found that having two routers aboard was the best set up. One did site surveys and attached to the wireless provider (ubiquity). The other (generic netgear) redistributed the internet aboard to various devices like laptops and cell phones. The worst of it was port forwarding for web cams but eventually this worked well. The ubiquity was ethernet'd to the internet input of the netgear.

Hey thank you. I found some info I on another board on how to set up the interface which seemed clunky but I should be able to get it. I didn't follow your use of the 2 routers that you describe above - is one only for broadcasting wifi onboard - what is a site survey ?

Yes, one is for hooking up to the provider and site survey is the function used. For example, when your laptop is looking for wifi it is using a site survey package built into the wifi code on your computer. So the Ubiquity will be used for extending range and looking for wifi to attach to (site survey).
The netgear is used to redistribute the internet connection on your boat.

Ahh, I thought the ubiquity interface had that capability. Without it you have to know the SSID to connect to and enter that into the interface. What is the router that has the site survey capabilities - I have never seen that. I have a few netgear and linksys routers running in the house and an old WRT54g that I use on the boat connected to the wave.

Which ubiquity do you have? the 2.4 or 5mhz ?

Dan,
Couple of questions.

Hardware is the same as Rogue?
Difference is the firmware ?
Rogue has a gooey, hence plug and play. (user friendly firmware)

2.5 or 5mhz, my question is if you get the 5mhz, will that work on a 2.5mhz hotspot?

Lastly, since the hardware is the same as Rogue, is it fair to say the performance would be the same?

Thanks

Danno,
Current Sea (Dave) is having a very similar if not the exact problem.

I have to get to the boat when we get back from Hawaii and review the config and hdwr again. It is the Bullet M2.

Walt I believe it is the same hdwr, with a firmware wrapper. I believe the performance would be the same. I once had to hack into the routers at a marina in the Abacos. They were all balled up. I was on the phone with their support in Jupiter Fl. while attached to their system in the Bahamas. They did not believe me until I started telling them about their software version, ip addresses etc.. Their support looked like it was the same as what I had once I was beyond their "wrapper" software.

No, you do not have to know the SSID. You will be presented with a list that you select from just as though it was your laptop or smart phone.

My old rouge should come back today via UPS and I am going to see what it is doing. I have found the Bullets at B&H photo and they are not expensive( like 75 bucks) and will probably pick one up while I am in the city today and play with the configurations and see what I come up with. I'll post updates as I go.

Walt tell Dave I'd be happy to compare notes on this if he wants to PM.

Thanks

You have no anchor, can't PM.

I am here.

So when I connect to my marina wifi I get down 6.72, up 10.47 and ping 14
Now I connect my rogue to the same wifi and I get down .68 up 5.20 and pint 282

SO my performance on the same wifi service goes down? I thought the rogue boosted the signal not dropped it!

So I am trying to decide, is it my rogue, is it my router, is it my cabling?

Network latency is completely different from signal strength although signal strength can impose a performance penalty in my experience. If your rogue is what you connect your phone and laptop to it is doing both jobs. I do not consider that the best configuration.
Dave how does your configuration look? Rogue plus another router? Which port on the router does the Rogue plug into? Internet or LAN?

Billy3 built my setup.
I have an comrod antenna, then a rogue (older model), then it runs to the POE, then it plugs into the router.
I will have to check where it plugs into on the router. Router is one of the old D-LInk WRT-54G models. Not sure and not at the boat.

When I connect, I connect to router.
I do the site survey thing and the pick my marina's wifi. Do this step once when it is not connected as it drops sometimes.

Dave I am set up the same and getting the same results. Last summer I did remove the router from the equation and plugged the rouge directly into the lan port on my laptop but no difference in the results.

So your thinking it is the rogue?
I am thinking it may be the router.
I am going to try swapping my rogue with Walter's rogue and see.
I didn't realize you can plug rogue directly into lan port, Don't you need the POE or you keep that in the line?

I just feel the performance of this is weak and I am ready to try something new.

Yes plug in directly to the man port on laptop from Poe adapter that came with the rouge(keeping your current power supplied to the rouge). I would definitely try that first which rouge do you have ? There are 2 an ECB model and an ECN and you can find it stamped on the bottom of the unit where the cat5 cable plugs into the unit.

Again, You will have to wait till I visit the boat.
Will let you know.
Thx

I plug into the internet port on the second router but you have to be savvy with the configuration parameters. It will definitely run slower if plugged into a lan port of the second router. To summarize you need two domains to make that work. For example the Rogue would be 192.168.70.xxx and the second router would be 192.168.71.xxx. It's a little tricky but it works great for me. By using this scheme you can address both routers from a device attached to the second, and they both are doing DNS but both have fixed IP addresses.
