Waverunner Rub rail

In prepping my Waverunner(FX Cruiser) I noticed the rubrail is somewhat scratched up. Was wondering what is the best way to smooth it out without damaging the finish. The rubrail is a plastic not really a rubber material. I was thinking of wet sanding, but not sure what to do to restore the sheen afterward.
Any suggestions?

Tried wet sanding part of the rail, removed the lighter scratches but did dull the finish. Any suggestions?

Try hand buffing it in a small spot with polishing compound. If that works like I think it will, bring out the buffer and slick it up.
