I have a 97 Carver 355ACMY with a Maxwell 800 freedom windlass. I posted a question back in 2012 regarding pressure arms. Everything went well after the help I got. I recently noticed that the pressure arm pivot hole in the deckplate is corroded to such an extent the pressure arm clip won't stay in. I also noticed that the windlass shaft wobbles as it rotates. I know the deckplate is approximately $500.00 and who knows why the shaft is wobbling. Do you think it is worth removing and shipping it off for repair or should I consider purchasing a new windlass because of it age? If the latter, what is the best windlass out there? Thanks for the help.

at more than half the cost of the windlass it doesn't make sense to repair it. I suggest contacting Maxwell to see what they have that will fit your specs and align with the existing deck holes.

I expect there have been a lot of Freedom 800 windlasses retired for various other reasons over the years. You might try a quick "WTB" query in the classified ads here and on other boating sites to see if anyone still has a non-working one with good deckplate they could help you out with. You never know...
