2008 Boat Trip

Starting to plan the 2008 boat trip. Looking at 2 destinations so far.

- Greenport
- Old Saybrook, CT.

In Greeport, I think Townsend is preferred place to stay.

Anyone know any good marinas in Old Saybrook?

Thinking of 4th of July week. What is best place for fireworks?

As always, once trip is planned, all are welcome to join.

We are also planning our 2008 trip. It’s later this year and we are most likely leaving around August 8th for about 10-12 days. Greenport is one of our destinations.

Looks Like so far:
- West Hampton Beach
- Montauk
- Block Is. (Maybe)
- Newport
- Greenport
- back to WHB then home.

Having stayed at both Townsend and the new town marina mutable times each – I agree that Townsend is a better choice- even though it’s a 5 or 20 minute walk to town there is 0 rocking at your slip- the Town Marina is in a great spot but you will be rocking till late at night
 
We will be in Greenport at Mitchell Park for Memorial Day, Sag for the Fourth of July(they have good fireworks), Then its off to Block Island. At some point we will end up in Mystic for a few days. We usually stay at the Seaport. Hopefully we will be able to get to Montauk and Port Jeff as well. We will busy I am sure. And of course those trips dont include the weekends at Hamburg cove, which is only about 15 minutes from our marina.

We were in Hamburg last year, will go back if we go to Old Saybrook. Do you know if they are having the fireworks at Fenwick this year and what date they are? I hear its a good show on the river.

We stayed at Saybrook Point Marina a few years ago. Decent place but not really too much to do. I may be a little jaded because I was having a gout attack and could hardly walk.

From what I remember, the heads were clean, they had indoor and outdoor pools and you rocked a little from the wake traffic. Also, the docks along the river side were fixed so on and off was a little challenging.

Right now we are planning to come to the GSB for Memorial Day and the Hudson for July 4 WE. We are still figuring our when to do our Block/Montauk and Atlantic City trips.
 
I need a floating dock for the dog. Have to look for that.
Hudson for the fourth sounds nice. Staying where?

I heard there was alot to do by the Old Saybrook Marina, not sure if that is the same place?
 
The place we stayed has a Hotel which is billed as a Spa as well. I believe it is the second one in on the port side.

As to the dock, I don't know if you can specify that you need a space on the interior where they had them. I think they rent out owner's slips to transients so I don't know if it is something they can commit to or not. It has been a few years.
 
Dave, Old Saybrook can be dicey. There are boat wakes and if the wind is blowing from the east you can get really rocked.

In Greenport, you have Townsends, two Brewers (Sterling Harbor is much nicer) and the brand new town docks.
 
I made a stop on a friend's boat at Old Saybrook, think we were at the first marina. Boats were rolling around as a lot of people weren't quite slowing down in time for the no wake zone. We took a short walk and didn't see much in the area, but it was really just an extended fuel stop so maybe if we had kept going we would have reached the town and more to do. To be honest nothing struck me as "hey, have to come back here".
 
WE got a butts kicked in Old saybrook marina. I was told that at a certain tide there is a bar just out side the marina that magnifys the wakes. In any event we were supposed to stay 3 days we left the next morning . If u look at the condition of everyones fenders and lines it looks like a tough place to stay .

Here's what we've got tentatively planned for 2008:

Memorial Day WE - South Shore - up in the air about Watch Hill, Hemlock on hook or get a slip

July 4 WE - Hudson - Either Haverstraw or look for an HRCC raft-up

July 13-20 - Block 4 nights, Montauk 3 nights

August 7-10 - Atlantic City - we may add 2 nights on front or back in Point Pleasant

Of course< anyone is welcome to join us.
 
Wow, guess Old Saybrook is not a good place. Someone told me it was a real nice place.
Ok, we will have to look for another spot.
Can anyone suggest any other good marinas?
There are some kids on this trip, so a pool is good. Prefer floating docks.

Dave since you were heading that way , why not Essex Island Marina ? Pool, Floating Dock.. Dog Friendly etc....
 
We were there last year, looking for someplace different.
Last year we did EIM, Mystic and Sag Harbor.

Its about 15 miles - I just looked at my breadcrumbs from last year and we ran at 22-25Kts almost the entire way

By almost I assume u meant up until the Submarine base where the greating party of police boats with 50 calibers are awaiting ur arrvial.

not that bad if u dont have camera and movie camera rolling !

I'd forgotten about the Thames and American Wharf.

That may need to be added to my June or August destination list.
