2008 Boat Trip

Hi Dave & Walter: Unfortunately, 1st week of July already taken at my wife's employ so that ends that trip. Thanks anyway, maybe we can hook up later in the summer. BTW, did you know that 'Passagemaker Magazine' is sponsoring a "TRAWLERFEST" in Greenport, L.I. from 6/26 thru 6/29?

Brad: May be able to hook up the next week with you to go to WHB. Will let you know asap. August at AC would be nice but I'm not too crazy about the ocean since I haven't been yet!

Don: If can't hook up with Brad will let you know and maybe can travel with you.

One way or another, I am making a trip this year.

Yeah Don. Can you imagine not only me but my wife, Nervous Nellie, on the ocean?? [:-banghead] If we had a slightly rough run, she'd pull my heart out and step on it not to mention head would spin and green soup would come out of her mouth and on top of that she would get the worst case of turrets syndrome that you have ever seen or heard. Trust me, the bay is way enough for her!!!

My wife and I are in on the trip to AC in Aug as is a friend of Brads and a friend of mine from Bay Shore, so we should have 4 boats. We did it last year and it is a great trip.

As far as the ocean is concerned, my wife makes the final go or no-go decision. I tortured her a few times and this is now how it is. You just have to be willing to sit tight if the weather does not cooperate.

Thanks for advice Mark. I will keep it in mind and you are right, my wife has the final say on any trip too. BTW, I have gas engines and am not sure how far I can go and still keep a quarter of a tank just in case. Do you make any gas stops along the way?

Rob, I would love to try the ocean but definitely cannot do it with the admiral on board for the first run. Need to do it on my own first that way I can build some confidence with her. This is only our 3rd season boating and 2nd with the 40 footer. If we go with a group I know she will still be uneasy but feel a lot better than if we tried it solo anywhere.

We don't have a planned stop to AC but you could come west inside and fuel up before exiting FI inlet with Brad and the other boats.

By the way, no guarantees but my avatar pic was the return last year and that is how flat the ocean was.

Rob, I love the ocean and it is the only way to go if you don't want to deal with skinny water. Since I primarily boat on the Sound, skinny water is not an issue and my ocean runs have been to AC, from E. Rockaway to NY Harbor and north to Block, Hyannis and Newport.

Dealing with my wife after a white knuckle ride is far worse than the ride itself....;)
 
BTW, here is the current version of our scheduled trips for this season:

5/22-26 (Memorial Day WE) - shooting for a slip at Watch Hill FI

7/4-6 (July 4 WE) - Heading up the Hudson. Possibly look for HRCC guys rafting

7/13-20 - 4 nights at Block, 3 nights at Montauk. Up in the air about trying for a mooring at Block and will see where our travel mates want to stay in Montauk.

8/7-10 - Atlantic City

8/29-9/1 (Labor Day WE) - Possibly American Wharf in CT
 
Thanks for the info Mark. How long a trip do you think it might be from the FI inlet. I realize that you are coming from the sound so maybe this is a question best answered by Brad, Rob or Walter. How about it guys? Any idea how long a ride to AC from the FI inlet?

Billy is correct... A bit over a 100 Miles.

I created a couple of AC routes using MapSource on my PC, if you go out FI inlet and head as the Crow Fly’s it is around 100-105 statute miles to the AC inlet, but in big ocean. In my 32ft I prefer to head a bit more closer to the NJ shore line which would add about 10-15 statute miles on. It is about the same as going to Block from the FI inlet. I have never been to AC or even up the Hudson. I keep heading east on my trips.

No,
I do also, problem with the ocean is not being able to predict the seas 6 months in advance. The reason I say 6 months is thats how far out reservations need to be made for a lot of marinas.

Walter, I think it will be a lot easier getting into a transient slip on very short notice this summer. Lot's o' boats gonna be staying at their docks!
 
Rob,I'm with you, I much prefer running in the ocean. Actually I wouldn't even try going inside. If it's too rough to run outside wait till the next day!

Hey Don, give Frank a call if you are still going to WHB. I am on the phone now with him and the dates are still open.

WHB will be open as of May 16th and the prices are the same... Good news !!
