BigTime Breakdown 5.7 SBC Water in Cylinders

John. Sorry about what you're going through. Buddy I do have a question for you though. Why are you so locked in on replacing the tbi with a carb? Just because you replace the manafold doesn't mean you have to do away with the tbi. That manafold is nothing special. It is just a 2 barrel manafold with a tbi system bolted to it. You can keep the tbi, ignition system and the ecu and just bolt on a new aluminum intake. Even though my money is on either the exhaust or a blown head gasket or both.

Gotta laugh though because there you are talking about getting rid of the tbi and I am still considering spending nearly 3k on tbi for mine and doing away with the carb lol...........D..........

I'm told the TBI on this particular engine will not attach to a manifold for a carburetor engine. This is a pre-vortec engine. If I go to vortec heads, then it needs a vortec manifold. If the TBI won't attach to vortec manifold then I'm in a corner.

Hope you and your tribe are doing well out there!

I think it's a bit too early to speculate.Just pull the head so you can see what's going on.

Agree with Charlie, too soon to know. But if you change to vortec heads and manafold, the tbi might just bolt right to it. I have a 95 with that same set up. I wouldnt run out and buy a carb and ignition just yet. I think no matter what you end up with, you will be able to reuse most of it.

Ok I guess, been having some medical issues here recently, thus why my boat is still in the drive way and the engine and drive still in the garage, Couple more months and it will make a full year..............D.........

Had any luck or progress my friend? Need me to come down and help ya out?......D........

Nope, D, been really busy. Hopefully next week or so I can do compression test on 2-4-6-8 and do the tests alien suggested earlier in the thread. Love to get to see you!

Well, today I compression tested the Starboard Bank.

STARBOARD BANK: 2 = 110, 4 = ZERO, 6 = 120, 8 = 115

Re-Sating Previous Test Above...

PORT BANK: 1 = 115, 3 = ZERO, 5 = 30, 7 = 115

Plot thickens. That's probably all I can do today between appointments and weather.

And, Oh... As I was cranking engine to test #4, I could hear a low "clunk." I'd like to think it was Starter-to-Flywheel noise, but I'd expect that to be tinnier-sounding, more like a "clang."

One would assume an exhaust manifold or head gasket would be limited to one bank of cylinders.

Yeah... Term "Catastrophic Failure" comes to mind. Yet, it ran. albeit not well, for a couple hours, and will still start and run now.

Port side, with compression gone in two cylinders, had water in all four. Starboard, with compression gone in only one cylinder, did not have water.

Do you have a bore scope? If so, look down in the spark plug holes and look at the piston tops, then slowly turn it over with a ratchet. I think your looking at a pull it and take it down though........D.........

It'll have to come apart. Probably just to get it out of the boat. I want to do Alien's water leak tests first, and not tear into the engine till the boat's been launched, towed to a ramp, loaded on the trailer and brought back home.

Will be nice to see if I can find what failed. Sill, I remain doubtful that a 19-year-old, 1400-hour, salt water, pre-Vortec, flat cam, obsolete TBI, engine is repairable from a practicality standpoint.

There are TBI vortec intakes.

Any engine that turns over can be repaired...but depending on what you want to pay. Too bad much of what you'll need weighs so much. I probably have everything you need. Even a 5.7/260 I rebuilt but went to the 400. Next time you come out west, bring a small trailer. I gots tons of stuff.

that clanking(with the 0 psi) sounds a bit like it could be a rod. scary

Charlie if you are having reading problems there are several zoom functions. I use a mouse so I just hold down ctrl key and scroll mouse for larger or smaller

From what I am seeing, your probably looking at 2 to 3k for a long block at a quick glance. I have more than that in parts in mine and havent heard it run yet. That could mean you can fix yours for about half that cost, but is it practical? I too think you shot a rod or something from the clanking sound. Probably time to get her in the drive way.........D...........

Since it is raw water cooled new is a good idea.

Now that is a very practical point.

Hey bruce, that works...but the page jumps all over the place. I cam zoom from the settings thingy but too big and I have to scroll back and forth

agree it doesn't make sure it fits the screen but I do find it useful because I don't have to permanently make a setting and I can zoon to any level while the zoom function only allows set increments. I personally find 115% fits OK as a base.

We decided to have a shop re-power it. Engine from MerC ReMan called "357." I project in progress now. Old is out, hull is OK in transom and cutout area, MerC transom assembly also corroded out. Ugh! Glad we got all the hours out of it that we did!

Any progress on yours?
