This thread goes down as one of BE's all time greatest in my book, and I've been around here a long time like some of you.

Pascal, even though you planned your course very well I'm sure, how much local knowledge have you been trying to get and soak in before each new leg? I'm sure a lot...

As for tracking with the KML file, it's just so cool. I did start getting an error with the file today though. I load it with Google Maps vs Google Earth, and starting around 4pm or so, I started getting this error:

Line 27: contains syntax errors
Line 2053: contains syntax errors
 
Pascal: I asked Digital about splicing, and they said not to, but Bill has far more experience then me. I ended up ordering a longer finished cable, but they probably just wanted a sale.

there is no way i'm running that cable thru the chase again, it's now full with other things! they sell a 25' extension so i don't see why it can't be spliced...

Steve, yes, i try to find a much info as possible, usually on the web (active captain or Salty's Cruiser) or also calling commercial traffic when needed. 3 days ago, we called both STow and BUS on the phone the day before New Smyrna to get up to date info. as a matter of fact, I just hailed ST to get Locknow on Fields Cut,a narrow stretch at the ICW intersection.

I asked before but didn't see a reply. Are you planning on running outside the DelMarVa or up through the Chesapeake? If through the Chesapeake we might just have to plan a little "pirate visit"!

Splicing is one thing, adding a connection/extension is another. They tell you that because most amateurs will screw up the splice..

We had no problem at Fields Cut using the tide, you have to be a little careful at both ends, not just the south as shown on Cruiser Net. My notes on Little Mud coming and going were that we really needed the extra 5 feet for puckerless passage. We made a short day of it and anchored on the South Altahama just to get it right.

Boy! Looks as complicated as running around the Cal Delta. I don't know how youse guys do it. Gimmee the wide open ocean any day...where the only thing you have to worry about is the occasional ship or whale.:)
 
Pascal you can add cable or put a new connector on the end of the antenna to extend it. If I remember correctly the digital cellular antenna comes with RG-8X style cable and a crimp on mini-PL female connector (installed) then they give you a male to male mini-PL connector for your final connection. You can not splice RF cable, however I think you mean you need to extend it that can be done with the proper crimping tool (I have one) and the proper connectors. I prefer TNC or "N" style connectors over mini-PL's. The TNC or "N" style connector is rated to a much higher frequency than the mini-PL. If you are going to extend the cable less than another 15-20 feet you can use RG-8X or it's LMR equivalent cable do not use RG-58U because at 1900Mhz it is very lossy and you will negate the gain of the antenna with too long a cable from the antenna to the amplifier/booster. If possible it is best to put the amplifier as close to the outside (donor) antenna as possible and then extend the coverage side of the inside antenna to the amplifier. This way the amplifier can really do it's job in an optimum way, it amplifies signal not noise from lossy cable. I'm not sure if I just made any sense. I did have to extend my Nextel 800/900Mhz antenna cable but not my 800/1900Mhz cellular antenna/amplifier set-up. I choose to extend the Nextel over the Cellular set-up because of the lower top operating frequency (940Mhz over 1950Mhz). Here is another tip if you really need a fairly long run (in my opinion) anything over 25 feet you should shorten the antenna cable as short as practical and then using the proper connectors run LMR-400 from the shortened antenna cable to the amplifier/booster. The weakest signal in the entire process is your donor signal (the cell sites broadcast signal) not the signal from your phone back to the cell site. There are 2 paths in any amplified RF booster system. The uplink path (from your phone to the tower) can be compensated by the booster and can stand more loss than the amplified receive signal (from the tower to your phone). George, yes Fields Cut was fine... most of the day was good actually, really no big deal even if we deduct the tide. The south entrance to the Ashepo-Coosaw Cut off was the only tight spot, we found 6' under the boat with a 4' tide, but still passable.

Mike, I'm not sure yet! depends on the weather... if the weather is ok we'll run outside to Ocean City then Atlantic City. If not, we'll go up the Ches and back down the Del. We migth get delayed tomorrow, strong front moving thru, Gale Watch, 25 to 30 with strong TS...

Bill, thks! i dont need to extend the cable juct to splice it since i had to cut it to get in the extension. I'll try to find the right connector... or we'll let you know as we go thru if we can meet! always fun to meet other RO!

You seem to have a rather nice schooner moored in front of you, and with the number of spreaders on the masts I would guess that the masts are well above the 65' limit for the ICW. If you have a good look at that one, please let us know the details.
 
well, there are a few good looking boats here (Charleston City Marina)... many way too big for the ICW!!

this is definitely BIG boat territory...
 
Wow, I am normally not one to just "Reply to thread" when I don't have anything to add. However, this is an exception. This has got to be the best thread ever. Boat delivery, a one way journey into new waters is the most exciting trip that fills the boaters worlds. I have brought two of my boats home to Rhode Island waters. One from Montreal, Canada and the last one from Mikee's neck of the woods in Maryland at Skipjack Marina.

To have it recorded like this is incredible. Great idea. Isn't technology a wonderful thing. Oh yeah, GREAT looking ship.
