Shutdown

Bummer. I left my boat in a slip on Lake Powell with plans to go up for one last trip next week before the cold weather moved in and I bring it home to use local.

Lake Powell is now shut down so all I can do is drive 4 hours each way to retrieve it. I'm disputing the slip fee on my credit card if not refunded.

....................................

Lake Powell entrances are now manned by Law Enforcement officers. Those with personal property (i.e. houseboat, trailer, etc.) may enter the park to access their property. You may come and go on the road ways but you cannot access the lake to enjoy Lake Powell. You may reside in your personal houseboat while on a buoy or in a slip but you cannot leave that location to go out on the lake. (I am unsure how one without a boat will get to his houseboat on a buoy.)

If on the lake before government shut down you may continue to enjoy the lake. Here is the verbiage from NPS documents.

"Overnight visitors will no longer be allowed to enter and those already here will be given 48 hours to make alternate arrangements and depart the park. Visitors in the back country, including remote areas on the lake, will be advised to leave but will allowed to complete their trip.

All land and water based fueling operations will remain open for official use and returning guests. Businesses will be allowed to enter the park to retrieve their customers."

Dangling rope is open to provide gas to those returning from an extended trip uplake.

Ramps maintain the normal night time soft closure with cones blocking access at the top of the ramp. Those returning from a trip may move the cones to retrieve their boats.

only a matter of time before they close ocean and lake access I guess. What a bunch of nonsense.

If the government (federal) is really "shut down" because they have no money, how is any part of it open? Are the people still working doing it for free? If there is no money, how can they be paid?

My wife is. She has been deemed "essential" personnel. Supposedly she will get back paid but who knows. If she does not come to work she will be laid off indefinitely.

We all go to a place call Watch Hill, which is a NPS park.
Columbus day is the last big hurrah there and alot of BE ro's are registered to go.
Right now we are closed out.

Not sure what happened to boats that were there when it shutdown as once you leave the marina, your in public waters.

I'm curious. If there is no money to run the government's normal expenses, where did the money come from for all the guards that are now guarding things that normally don't have guards????

Good question Phily. My guess is they are treating them the same as my wife. Essential personnel. You have to come to work and you may get paid someday.

The watch hill marina is a concession right? Like uh WTF?

John,

I believe the 13th amendment outlawed indentured servitude.

Funny. My wife said something very similar this morning as she left for work.

if 1/3 of the government is shutdown, then I should pay 1/3 less tax!

One thing that is not accurate is the comment that the government is shut down. Only a portion is not operating. Lots of functions are funded like social security, Medicare, military, etc. Taxes are still collected so sufficient funds are available to pay the debt loans, Obamacare, Medicare, VA, and other essential functions. There is no reason to default since 2/3 of the funding is still flowing in.

The curious part is that more guards and barricades have been added to parks like at the WW II Memorial than are normally employed. One Senator commented that there were two more guards at the Memorial that were present to protect the US property at Bengasi. Many Congress members moved the obstructions and the vets were able to visit the memorial. Why would they spend money to erect barricades anyway, it is an open area 24/7.

Not quite - the military is expected to get their paychecks on time. The military is NOT funded right now.

Late news sez the Navy-Air Force football game will be played

Crazy manipulations designed to get Obama's program into the news, one way or another. Smart bastards.

Mount Vernon--Washington's Home

The Park Service tried today to shut down the mansion and other privately owned property associated with the Mount Vernon Mansion, longtime home of George Washington.

Big mistake. Private Property. Local talk of legal action. Another nasty todbit indicative of the way the president desires to do business.... and of the really stupid high level federal employees he has put into positions of authority.

SSA is only partially funded. My wife, a Division Director at SSA, has been deemed "non-essential". If she checks her work Blackberry she's in violation of that 143 year old law "rtribble" linked to (she's driving me nuts cleaning the house over and over again :-)

Agreeing with many here, how much extra money has "the regime" spent that normally wouldn't be spent? NWS website is only half working, except that by reading the "forecast discussion" one can tell that they're fully funded. The Chesapeake Bay Smart Buoys that are automated are somehow off-line with a statement blaming the "Shutdown". Funny, my business is busier now than when the darn feds were going to work!

On Monday the president signed the house pushed bill and senate approved bill to fund the military.
Of course there may be some exceptions since our government makes nothing simple.

That bill only provides for military pay - not the military's funding for anything else. Just base pay and allowances.
