2008 Boat Trip

Brad, I used to spend the winter planning my summer trip, but lately I just pick when I'm going and leave. We stop at a place (marina or anchorage) stay there til we feel it's time to move on, then call to get a slip at the next stop. This way I'm not bound to a schedule either timewise or placewise.

It has worked out much better for us.

With the price of boating getting so high, we have not had any problem getting into any marina that we wanted to go to.

It's pretty much a straight run from Montauk to Newport, you can go on either side of Block. On a clear day, you can see RI from Montauk.

Essex Island:

I went there a few years back and will never go there again. Facilities were great but the manager treated us like dirt. Real bad taste left.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Exact opposite, great dockhands, and management. You must have done something really bad to piss them off.

They have always treated us great at Essex.

If you really want bad service and an attitude, go to Payne's Dock on Block Island.

Got out of that place as soon as Champlin's had space for us.

Guess it must be the day or how you interact with them.

Had good experiences at Essex and at Paynes.
Come to think of it the only place I ever had a bad experience was Townsends and that was because we were a young and a party bunch which was a little over the edge for that marina.

The one time I was at Payne's we were treated like gold by the owner. He personally tied us up, told us about the facility and joked around with us.

It was he who saw our "gamefisher" outboard on the dink and remarked, "Oh, the old Sears, and row back"

Hogan:

Since you already know about this horrible experience and story, and this dreadful woman, I will not bore you with any details.

Actually, Joe, I don't know about your bad experience there - I'm quite surprised to hear that you had one.

In any event, they have always gone out of their way to accomodate us and treat us as welcome guests any time we have gone there. I think that the vast majority of boaters who have stayed there have had wonderful experiences - they have a huge number of transients who return year after year.

Dave have you been back to Townsends since ? Usually Dock Masters are forgiving… I know there was this one rowdy group at West Hampton Beach; they even had the nerve to have a blow-up pool, oh my. The town got their panties in a bunch and wanted them out. But the Dock master at the time Ira fought for them and everyone made nice. Let’s see now, I wonder who that could be? A hint….. It was not Dave, Walter, Rob or I…. ;)

We were thinking of going back to Townsends this year. It was more the group we were with. Up late, loud music, drinking on dock. Dockmaster actually said to us that our kind was not welcome there. We also had a run in at the pool when we tried to bring our own drinks into pool and they said only their drinks were allowed. It's a nice place but is a little stuffy.

Ok, we are all set. Fourth of July is getting tougher to book. Alot of places were booked. As always, if anyone wants to join us, you are more than welcome. We are 3 boats right now. Schedule is:

6/28-6/30 Greenport – Townsend Marina

6/30 – 7/3 Newport Marina – Newport

7/3 – 7/5 Treasure Cove – Riverhead

Hey Rob we got a new member who just joined our place that you always mention...
They kept their boat at Treasure Cove... Jim and Anne Marie - Sea Note an older 39' Bayliner.

Rob,
What will that get me? A slip next to the swamp?
I was suprised when I called and she said she had noone book for fourth of july yet, but every other place was booked! Is there something wrong with this place?

Easy Brad.

Bringing up that place with him is like watching an Abbott and Costello skit..."Niagara Falls".."Slowly I turn, step by step..."

lol.... love ya Mark....

Dave ,, they're great people there. U never know what yea might need and what they can provide....

Can someone give me the best Nav tips on the route to TC after the locks? Looking at Map Source going west after red “2” it looks like very skinny water. Is it RRR heading west ? I see Greens that look like a channel which would put the Reds on starboard.

Thanks, Brad

It's a narrow, but well marked channel, make sure you follow the buoys and you'll have not problems. go outside them and you'll hit bottom
