Miami - Nantucket live on Webcam...

We hope to leave for Newport EARLY. Nothing going on here. This place is a ghost town. The water didn't turn blue, I did. I'm used to playing in Biscayne Bay, Coconut Grove and South Beach. I can't wait to be in Newport (especially after the info. & pic from by Glenn. Thanks a lot! Nancy, I was showing how the boat was rocking while doing the wave. Just having some fun. Being out in open water for some hours gets monotonous. I know one thing: I'll never complain about the heat and humidity in Miami ever again!
 
Yeah, I've laughed more than once watching you on the bridge! There have been so many shots that were good candidates for "Caption This!" ;)

I wish the weather had been a more welcoming. It's still going to be on the cool side for the next few days and through the weekend, but at least it's supposed to be sunny. You're going to love Newport! When do you head home?

Depending on how Pascal gets on my nerves, or how I get on his, I might be leaving from Newport to MIA on Saturday. I dunno if I'm up for more cold weather in Nantucket. I've been colder on this trip than snowboarding in Utah in March!

Block Island doesn't come alive until summer. Definitely dead in the off-season. As for the weather, yes it's colder than Miami, ... but it has been much colder than normal from the mid-Atlantic to the northeast for the past couple weeks.

The weather in Miami-Biscayne Bay is really nice in the sping. The admiral and I were there and the upper keys last month. Can't wait to go back.....probably in the fall.

You'll enjoy Newport...and the weather is supposed to warm up by about Saturday.

that's what they always say but the truth is it'll warm up a bit by mid July, except for the foggy days around Block.
By mid September Block will be equally deserted. Memorial day to labor day is the "summer" season then everybody puts away the white shoes and disappears.
 
Pascalg. It is always cold this time of year. Summer in new England is really nice. It even gets into the 90'. All of that area, BI,Newport, the Islands and the Cape are very busy during summer. They get about a month and a half to two months of summer. You have be careful and pay very close attention or you will miss it(summer).

In central Fl today, we were in the 90's, bright sun, Westerly winds to 15 knts. Just another day in paradise.

I was out near you guys today. I moved my new boat from Point Judith up the Narragansett. 4-6' rollers outside the harbor of refuge. I was looking in case you guys made the run to Newport, but I was a few hours ahead of you (Plus you went to Block)

Block Island is lively and fun starting witht he summer. I expect thsi weekedn will start picking up but we usualy go in Mid August.

btw Naomi, It was cold out on the water today. The wind was blowing good and the spray hitting my face was freezing my ears, and I live here. Teh water was a pretty light blue today though.
 
For the real numbers regarding the average weather, look at the daily averages on weather.com
For Newport, May 22nd has an average high of 65. It is predicted to be 56. Well-below normal. Yup, it's cold, but almost 10 degrees below normal. Spring on the New England coast is cold, as the water takes a while to warm up. It's the opposite in the fall. The water holds the heat, and you have lots of warm days well into the fall when you're near the coast.

Newport tourism activity is busiest in summer, especially summe weekends. Since it is before summer, and you are arriving on a Thirsday, don't expect it to be hopping. .... But still livelier than Block Island! It might be busy this weekend if the weather finally breaks.
 
Looks like you could have some of the best weather of the past few days this sat,sun,mon in nantucket, but not miami temps.
 
Regardless of the day time temps the cold water makes it chilly at night and on the water this time of year.

Hang in there Naomi ! Buy some winter clothes on sale this time of year :) The Sea ports will come alive with people this weekend.
 
we're in newport, indeed on a mooring. it's a short ride from block and yet another beutiful harbor entrance!!! they only have a few moorings for larger boats here, the harbor master showed us to an available mooring and told us the big ones dont' have any pennants... rig your own. wasn't too bad despite the breeze, i did it from the stern then slid the boat down.

ITK, if the offer still stands, i could use a ride to NAPA tomorrow morning to pick up 10 pails of oil... i need to do an oil change. Rotella is 40% cheaper at Napa compared to the local yard :-) i you can't don't worry, i'll get a cab...
 
AAAARRRRGH!!!! The Museum of Yachting is closed until May 31st! Why is the word "hibernation" blinking in my mind? We are waiting for the Harbormaster to come by, he said he'd bring us maps and info..... for what? It's gotta be 40 deg. with the wind! I'm trying to hang in there but it's hard.

What a bummer on the museum. Hard to believe they're not open for the holiday weekend. Since it's cold, you should consider touring one of the mansions. www.newportmansions.org. I've only driven by them so far--I was there in the *really* off-season--but they are magnificent, and it would be worth touring one.

Are there no slips to accommodate you? It would be awfully nice to be on a dock.

Check with the local NAPA they will usually deliver larger quanties.
 
Pascal, I'm curious, not being a diesel owner, are you saying you need 50 gallons of oil? Is that what the engines take?

If so, you might want to call NAPA, they'd probably deliver that quantity.

If you tour the big mansions, the best are probably these three

1. The Breakers. It's the largest, and quite amazing

2. The "Marble House". Might be the most beautiful.

3. The Rosecliff. You've probably seen it in a few movies, including "The Great Gatsby" and "True Lies". In True Lies, it's near the beginning where Arnold Shwartenaegger says, "Here's My Invitation". Swiss Alps in background were CGI. I had my Senior Prom at Rosecliff back in .....well quite a awhile back. It has a beautiful giant ballroom.

The weather is supposed to be warmer tomorrow and better on the weekend.
