2008 Boat Trip

One thing to remember about the Jersey Shore is GREEN FLYS!!!

Didn't have any at Sea Brite, but go further south and you might encounter those beasts!!!!

No flys at Block Island.
 
This year there have been so many changes in personalities, schedules and opinions, on trips with my YC group. My wife and I are now really considering doing two medium length trips this year instead of the one 12 day. I am hoping to still get to Newport and rendezvous with a friend that will be either going or coming from even a longer trip east, I think to Maine. I would be very interested in hooking up with you guys on a AC, Cape May or another NJ destination. Also a HRCC raft-up would be great. I may be able to get a couple of friends that I believe some of you met to join also.

You're welcome to join us in AC in August if it fits your plans. I'm waiting for a confirm from my friend who would leave either from Bay Shore or East Rockaway. Last year he over-nighted in East Rockaway and we met up just off Ambrose light.

AC was really good. Trump-Farley is a nice but pricey marina (what isn't). The pool is a bit of a challenge as it is on the roof so you go up through the hotel to get there. They had a terrific band outside on the deck at night. We went to see Movin Out at Harrahs one night and spent one afternoon on the Boardwalk.

Belmar does look nice.

It appears from maptec photos that a bridge boat would require 3 bridge openings to get inside where the marinas are. Is that the case?

I think I read 2 bridges, 1 opens on demand, the other opens every 30 minutes.

I wonder what the current is like in there when the tide is running. Could be a long 30 minutes if you hit it wrong.
 
We are now considering Newport, RI and Block Island.

Anyone have any marina recommnedations for Newport?

Block, we may skip champlains and try the boat basin for a change.
 
Don't know if you require a pool, if so, the only one in Newport is the Hotel & Marina

There was a fairly recent thread about what to do and where to stay in Newport, but I forget which forum it was in.

Boat basin is nice and dog friendly but no pool. Don't expect a lot of dock help.

Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina was nice when we were there years ago. Cross the street and you're in town. Indoor pool.

Dave, We will be in Newport mid July around the 15-19th most likely at Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina.

Mark, it was real nice meeting you yesterday. I know the winds were a bit much while we were walking the docks. At least you got a feel for the club and some of the people. We are a diverse group of ages and professions, but everyone checks their egos at the door and boating becomes common ground. Later in the day BillyK and I were talking about your AC trip and we are very interested. Hopefully we can get a bunch of people to go. How far in advance do you make reservations at Trump?

I'm thinking no later than April 30. We made them in June last year and were frozen out of some weekends.
 
Newport Hotel looks real nice.
Very pricey at $5.50/foot plus $9 for juice for july 4th.
And those are 2007 rates!

Anyone know if there are fireworks in the harbor? I am sure there is.
Where is it better to be for the fouth, block or newport?

FYI - Newport is 10nm from Block and 35nm from Montauk. Not as far as I thought it would be.
I am figuring about 5 hours from Lindenhurst?
 
Block is a great place to be on the 4th. There is a fantastic, olde-tyme America parade, lots of parties and fireworks over Crescent Beach.

There used to be a wet tee-shirt contest on the beach after the parade, but due to "political correctness" it is now just a fond memory - or if you are Jonathan, you can still look at the pictures.

Reservations are a MUST, and need to be made SOON.
 
Ok, hope to finalize details this week.

Walter, lets book. I say we head to Newport, stay 3 nights there, then head to block for 4 nights. Or if you want to break it up, we could do 2 nights in Greenport, then 3 nights in Newport, then 2 nights in Block.
 
Newport has fireworks for the 4th, they are usually pretty nice. Haven't been to Block on the 4th so can't compare.
